What Is Sabadilla?
Veratridine alkaloids bind to sodium channels and prevent them from closing, causing continuous nerve stimulation, paralysis, and death. The mode of action is similar to pyrethrin but through a different binding site. Sabadilla was historically valued for its effectiveness against true bugs (Hemiptera) — squash bugs and stink bugs — which are notoriously difficult to control with most organic insecticides.

What Pests Does Sabadilla Kill?
Sabadilla is effective against the following pests:
How to Apply Sabadilla
Best for: Historical use against Hemipteran pests (squash bugs, stink bugs) that resist most other organic insecticides. No current recommended use due to product unavailability.
Avoid for: All current use. Product is not commercially available and the toxicological profile does not justify seeking alternative sources. Spinosad and kaolin clay provide partial stink bug/squash bug control without the mammalian toxicity risks.
Residual activity: 24–48 hours (rapid UV degradation similar to pyrethrin)

| Overall Rating | Caution — Use with caution — timing and technique matter |
Why Isn't Sabadilla Working?
If Sabadilla isn't delivering results, check these common failure modes:
Product is essentially unavailable — no major manufacturer currently produces sabadilla for the U.S. market
Dust formulation caused severe sneezing, respiratory irritation, and allergic reactions in applicators
Veratrum alkaloids are toxic to mammals, including significant cardiac effects at moderate doses
Broad-spectrum activity kills beneficial insects alongside pests
