Thrips

Also known as: Thunder flies, thunder bugs

Identification

Extremely tiny (1-2mm) slender insects, barely visible. Look for silvery streaks and black frass dots on leaves. Blue or yellow sticky traps for detection.

Damage

Rasping-sucking — scrape cells and feed on sap, causing silvery streaks, distorted growth, and virus transmission (TSWV)

Biological Controls

Amblyseius cucumeris (predatory mite), minute pirate bugs (Orius spp.), Hypoaspis miles for soil pupae

Prevention

Blue sticky traps for monitoring (thrips prefer blue over yellow). Remove plant debris where pupae overwinter. Reflective mulch confuses thrips.

Common Mistake

Treating only foliage — thrips pupate in soil. Combine foliar sprays with soil-drench treatments or predatory soil mites for complete lifecycle control.
