Flea Beetles

Also known as: Various Chrysomelidae species

Identification

Tiny (2-3mm) shiny beetles that jump when disturbed. Characteristic shothole pattern on leaves. Most active in warm, dry weather.

Damage

Chewing — create shothole damage (tiny round holes) in leaves; larvae feed on roots

Best Organic Solutions (Ranked)

Solutions ranked by reliability tier — start with Tier A options.

Spinosad Tier A

Contact kill — apply in evening

Fast knockdown of adults

Barrier prevents feeding and egg-laying

Dusted on dry plants in dry conditions

Neem Oil Tier A

Antifeedant reduces damage

Biological Controls

Braconid wasps parasitize larvae. Beneficial nematodes (Steinernema) attack soil larvae.

Prevention

Row covers are the most effective prevention — install at transplanting. Delay planting to avoid peak flea beetle season. Trap crops (radish, Chinese mustard).

Common Mistake

Treating established plants instead of preventing with row covers — flea beetle damage is worst on small transplants. Once plants are large, they outgrow the damage.
